The Whigs – Mission Control

January 17, 2008

thewhigsmissioncontrolSometimes I hear an album, and it just puts a smile on my face. Mission Control, the second album by the Whigs, is that kind of an album. On my third or so listen through, I realized that this, their second release, is just good rock and roll, not for any complicated reason, but rather because it’s standout music, passionately and well played. They’ve been called a garage rock band, and some of those influences come through, but their sound isn’t retro in the least. Aspects of their music may remind you sometimes of other bands, but they aren’t purists, slaves to the accurate recreation of a bygone era, or worse, imitators. They are just themselves, a fantastic rock band, and you gotta dig their crazy beat. Standout cuts: “Like A Vibration,” “Production City,” “Right Hand On My Heart” and “Already Young.”
