Ingrid Michaelson – Girls And Boys

January 18, 2008

What I used to call “VH1 music,” that is, adult alternative and “lite rock” music, now has spread to other sources now that VH1 specializes in nostalgia and reality shows that trade in nostalgia. Those sources? Well, they include Starbucks (who have their own record label now), various TV series with hipster soundtracks, and commercials. New York based singer/songwriter Ingrid Michaelson’s music seems tailor made for those outlets, and unsurprisingly, it’s been featured on Grey’s Anatomy and in commercials. It’s sensitive and sweet without being literate or overly complicated, and literal and emotional without much in the way of sharp edges or ambiguity. It’s pleasant enough music, though it’s decidedly more Jewel than Aimee Mann. Standout cuts: “Die Alone,” “Masochist,” “The Way I Am” and “Glass.”
