Shelby Lynne – Just A Little Lovin’

January 22, 2008

The second covers album this month from a major American singer is devoted to the work of a single artist, Dusty Springfield. Shelby Lynne’s Just A Little Lovin’ is a collection of nine Springfield songs with one Lynne penned original inspired by Springfield’s music, “Pretend.” The covers are somewhat stripped down compared to the originals, though they are by no means acoustic. They put Lynne’s relaxed, assured vocal interpretations front and center over jazzy arrangements. Lynne’s goal in making the record was pretty modest: “Dusty Springfield was a soulful singer. You can’t ever fill her shoes. So I just set out to sing songs we all want to hear again.” She’s nevertheless made an album that will be essential listening for her own fans, and that will please Springfield fans as well. Standout cuts: “Just A Little Lovin’,” “I Only Want To Be With You,” “The Look Of Love” and “Pretend.”
