Robert Pollard – Superman Was A Rocker

February 7, 2008

robertpollardsupermanRobert Pollard’s new album Superman Was A Rocker has as its genesis a collection of never before used instrumentals written over a period of 20 or so years, many recorded with Guided By Voices. Pollard then went into the studio and put vocals and additional music over the instrumentals, thus creating the 13 tracks included here. The result is a fun, sometimes goofy but always highly listenable mixture of songs and what would be more accurately described as sound collages: The amusing “Back To The Farm,” wherein members of Guided By Voices are harassed during a radio interview by a call in listener is an example of the latter. Recommended for fans of Guided By Voices and Pollard’s solo work, and anyone interested in experimental pop. Standout cuts: “Another Man’s Blood,” “Go Down First,” “Substitute Heaven” and “Peacock.”
