Sons and Daughters – This Gift

February 10, 2008

sonsdaughtersthisgiftThis Gift, the third album from Glasgow based band Sons and Daughters, is a potent mixture of musical styles, mostly 60’s garage and psychedelic rock, with some late 70’s and 80’s style punk and New Wave thrown as well. There are no ballads here, just straight ahead, aggressive and often searing guitar based rock and roll, with powerful vocals by Adele Bethel that often recall Tanya Donelly in her Throwing Muses days or Colleen Fitzpatrick when she was with Eve’s Plum. The best material is weighted in the first half of the album, but all in all, This Gift is a pretty terrific rock album. Standout cuts: “Gilt Complex,” “Split Lips,” “Rebel With The Ghost” and “Darling.”
