The Kills – Midnight Boom

March 19, 2008

Imagine LCD Soundsystem, Curve, the White Stripes and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion getting together for an album, and you might start to approach the sound of Midnight Boom, the third album from the Kills. Maybe it’s best to just call it a punk album, punk with some seriously ass kicking, sexy and sultry pieces of flair. Jamie Hince and Alison Mosshart have made an inspired third record, 12 tracks over a 34 minute running time, but most listeners might feel something like exhaustion even after the seemingly short running time. Midnight Boom ends on a relatively quiet note, however, with “Goodnight Bad Morning,” which weaves in a nice musical reference to the Velvet Underground’s “Sunday Morning.” Punk, rock and electroclash fans should take note: If you don’t already know them, you just may have some new heroes in the Kills. Standout cuts (in album full of them): “U.R.A. Fever,” “Cheap And Cheerful,” “Getting Down” and “Sour Cherry.”
