She and Him – Volume 1

March 20, 2008

She and Him is Zooey Deschanel, better known as an actress, and M. Ward, better known, as well, M. Ward, accomplished indie musician. For the most part, Ward keeps his contributions to the often ornate, sometimes tongue in cheek musical arrangements, while Deschanel takes lead vocals, having written the majority of the material included here. She’s got quite the voice really, rather like Neko Case, in fact. Her songs are heavily influenced by 60’s and early 70’s pop and country, countrypolitan in particular, but you’ll find some Phil Spector and Motown influences here, too. (They have also specifically namechecked artists like Dusty Springfield, Linda Ronstadt and the Zombies in press for the album.) Ward adds vocals on two cuts, both covers, “You Really Got A Hold On Me” and “I Should Have Known Better,” the latter a Beatles song done like a Hawaiian hulu tune. All in all, this seems like an album primarily meant to entertain, and for the most part it succeeds. Recommended for alt-country and indie pop fans. Standout cuts: “Sentimental Heart,” “This Is Not A Test,” “I Should Have Known Better” and “Sweet Darlin’.”
