Carlene Carter – Stronger

March 22, 2008

In some circles, Carlene Carter is credited with being alt-country before there was such a thing as alt-country, which I guess is another way of saying she was alt-country before alt-country was cool.. Stronger is her first album in well over a decade, and though some songs are marred by some overly busy production, it’s mostly good stuff, highlighted by strong material both in the country/twang rock vein that marked her work in the 80’s and early 90’s, and in a more traditional country vein that recalls the work of her mother, June Carter. It’s definitely recommended for fans, who’ve been waiting a long time for new material from Carter. Standout cuts: “The Bitter End,” “To Change Your Heart,” “On To You” and “Break My Little Heart In Two.”
