Jamie Lidell – Jim

May 15, 2008

Deeply influenced by classic soul and R&B artists like Jackie Wilson and Marvin Gaye, Berlin based singer/songwriter (and former electronic music experimentalist) Jamie Lidell’s new album Jim is a pleasant enough diversion until it finally really catches on fire with track 7, “Hurricane,” a terrific song that almost makes the whole album worth the price of admission. Lidell follows it up with a couple tracks later with “Where Do You Go?,” another high energy song, before wrapping things up with a top notch soul ballad, “Rope Of Sand.” “Hurricane” is the moment in the album when you feel Lidell isn’t just paying tribute to and having fun with genres of music that he clearly loves, but actually taking a hold of them and making them his own, and in the process creating something exciting and fresh. “Little Bit Of Feel Good” is the current single, but the aforementioned songs are the real reason to get excited about what Lidell will come up with next.
