Ratatat – LP3

July 10, 2008

LP3, the third album from Brooklyn based instrumentalists Ratatat (Mike Stroud and Evan Vast), kicks off with “Shiller,” the first single with an opening synthesizer riff that evokes 70’s science fiction films. It’s a “beatless” track that establishes some of the musical styles and instrumentation that will permeate the rest of the album, that is, Krautrock, Queen-style guitar riffs, 80’s synthpop, world music influences along with 80’s era video game noises, and the occasional use of the guitar talk box. Some of the tracks meander a bit, or else don’t really go anywhere, while others don’t last as long as you hope they will (“Flynn,” in particular), but for the most part, LP3 is inspired fun, with Ratatat displaying an ever expanding range. Standout cuts: “Shiller,” “Mirando,” “Shempi” and “Black Heroes.”
