Amy Ray – Didn’t It Feel Kinder

August 16, 2008

Atlanta based singer/songwriter Amy Ray has built an impressive solo career outside of her work with the Indigo Girls, creating a body of music that by now is easily on par with her work with Emily Saliers. Didn’t It Feel Kinder is her fourth solo record, and it’s as politically engaged, sexually frank and socially astute as her other records. It gets off to a good start with a slow burning ballad about tolerance and intolerance called “Birds Of A Feather,” but really catches fire mid-album with “Out On The Farm,” “SLC Radio” and “Blame Is A Killer.” I have to say, I prefer Amy Ray’s music when it rocks out a bit, and those last two in particular are some pretty good rockers. All in all, Didn’t It Feel Kinder isn’t as strong a collection as Prom was, but it’s still solid work from an always interesting singer/songwriter.
