The Veils – Sun Gangs

April 6, 2009

theveilsAdd some Nick Cave, some Jeff Buckley and some surprisingly muscular rock guitars, and you have the basic sound of Sun Gangs, the third album from UK based band The Veils. Their music still has the elegant and moody folk and pop infused balladry found on their previous releases, but on many tracks, it’s been enhanced with bigger, often fiercer, rock underpinnings. Some of the tracks, “Killed By The Boom” and “Three Sisters” in particular, are out and out rockers, while the eight minute plus “Larkspur” ends with a crashing rock crescendo. It may not be a radical change in sound for them, but it yields some striking, often powerful results, and that, coupled with some of their best material yet, makes Sun Gangs a career high for the Veils. Standout cuts: “Sit Down By The Fire,” “The Letter,” “Three Sisters” and “Larkspur.”
